ABOUT ME

I’m Debbi

With years of experience on national newspapers and magazines, I am an all-round writer and editor. I’m equally at home with project managing an entire publication, writing tightly to brief or finding that perfect case study to illustrate your campaign or feature.

During my career, I have edited commercial magazines and charity membership magazines, as well as the lifestyle section of a national newspaper and the consumer pages of a national weekly magazine.

I work closely with charities and other organisations, such as universities, providing storytelling expertise and copywriting.

I’m also available for media training, broadcast work, ghostwriting and lecturing.

MY WORK

What I do

Journalism

If you need an experienced journalist to turn around copy at top speed, then look no further. Whether it’s a real-life story, celebrity interview, zeitgeisty lifestyle piece or news article, I’ll write to the style and length that fits your publication.

I’m a skilled editor brimming with ideas and contacts. I have strong InDesign and subbing skills, enabling me to complete any project to the highest of standards. See my editing portfolio here.

Copywriting

If you’re looking to inject some spark into your communications, repurpose copy or need help with report writing and analysis, I can help. With my strong editorial skills, I will be sensitive to your organisation’s tone of voice and your key audience. I will communicate your message in plain English, whether you have 300 words or 30,000 words to play with. I have experience working with charities, universities and small businesses. Contact me to find out more about my copywriting work.

Broadcasting

At home in front of a television camera or in a recording studio, I’m happy to be interviewed for both TV and radio. I can provide talking head soundbites or a longer interview on a variety of topics, although I often specialise in fitness and parenting. I’m a regular contributor to BBC Radio Scotland discussion panels. I’m very flexible and usually available at short notice. Contact me to find out more about my broadcasting work.

Lecturing

I am currently working as an Associate Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London. I teach both undergraduates and MA students, focusing on digital journalism and feature writing. Bring your media courses to life with a working journalist who has first-hand stories to tell about today’s writing and communication industry. I’m happy to guest lecture on my experience of print media and can tailor my lectures to your course or cover specific issues as requested. Contact me to find out more about my lecturing work.

Let me help your charity stand out from the crowd

Are you looking to review how your organisation uses storytelling to get its message across? Perhaps you are looking for more stories or you need to tell the ones you have more impactfully. I will speak to department heads to understand how you currently use your case studies and create a bespoke plan to help you move forward. I will work with key members of your team to help you tell authentic lived experiences, while also helping case studies feel connected and buoyed by the process.

Whether you are a team of 30 or 300, I can show you how to maximise storytelling to help your charity get its bespoke message to the people it needs to reach most.

I can also provide training and consultancy on tone of voice, press releases and communications.

Get in touch to find out how I can help.

Charity copywriting & editing

I will write a blog or feature to your exact requirements, including the stories of your members.

I can analyse and streamline impact reports or research findings to make them ready to read for key audiences, including sub-editing and working with designers to oversee production, including images and final layout.

Media Training

I provide workshops on how to pitch case studies to national and local media. I will work with your content team on tone of voice as well as internal and external communications, including how to write the perfect press release and top tips on how to get your charity into your chosen press.

Stories

Storytelling is key for any charity to highlight a trend or campaign. I can help you find the perfect case study, interview them sensitively and write either a first-person piece or third person account, or brief them to write their own blog depending on your needs.
